WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Mountain golf doesn’t get much better than on this Canuck course north of Vancouver. The Chateau Whistler course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., has rushing streams and a 400-foot elevation gain that makes caddying an athletic event. Hence the cart, gratis, equipped with a GPS system to help you line up your ball with the cup (and they don’t even call it cheating). Whistler also has whitewater rafting, guided fishing, hell-hiking, 280 miles of mountain biking, a climbing wall and summer glacier skiing.
How long did you say your vacation was? Best bed: Chateau Whistler, a massive castlelike resort with an outdoor hot tub, a spa with Ayurvedic treatments and eucalyptus steam rooms (800-606-8244). Outstanding outfitter: Whistler River Adventures does everything but towel off your feet: organizing white-water and rafting tours, jet-boating and fishing trips (604-932-3 532). Apresgolf: The deck of Brasserie des Artistes in Whistler Village, where the people-watching is so superb that patio is used as a verb, as in “let’s go patio-ing” (604-932-3569). Festivals: Whistler Summer Session (multisport race week), July 7-16; Whistler Roots Music Weekend, July 14-16.
JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING
The toughest part of your stay just might be narrowing your sporty options. Hike one of the dozens of spectacular and challenging trails, such as the nine-mile loop to Amphitheater Lake in Grand Teton National Park; fly-fish or raft along the aptly named Snake River, or rent a mountain bike and granny-gear it up the Old Pass Road toward Idaho. Call it a day with the two-hour Sports Recovery treatment (massage, herbal wrap and body scrub) at the Rusty Parrot Lodge’s Body Sage Spa ($150, 307-733-2000).
Best bed: The Amangani costs a fortune, but this ultramodern lair has a heated outdoor lap pool cut into the mountainside (877-734-7333). Outstanding outfitters: Mad River Boat Trips, for rafting the Snake (307-733-7626); Wilson Backcountry Sports, for bike rentals and trail info (307-733-5228). Reason to rise: The trout and eggs at Nora’s in Wilson (307-733-8288). Best burger: Even though Wyoming law requires that beef be served well-done, you’ll inhale the half-pounder at Billy’s Burgers (307-733-3279). Festivals: Micro Brew Festival, July 14-16; Rendezvous Mountain Hill Climb, August 26. [Read more…]
